I live in a building that is owned by the US Dept. of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). This building was constructed for people with disabilities.
My issue is that a Security Guard posted a sign about the loss of their fellow employee and it contained the date and location for Memorial Services. This sign had the symbol of the Holy Cross in the background.
This sign was posted on the glass window of the Security's office facing the public in the Main Lobby of the building. The Security's office is adjacent to the building manager's office.
I had requested that the sign be removed from public view because of the symbol on the sign. I felt that this infringed my rights to freedom of religion and that because the building was owned by the Federal Government, it constitutes a violation on the separation of church and state.
A day after I filed a complaint with the management office and with officials at HUD, a symbol of the Holy Cross was spray painted on my door in retaliation of my complaint.
Is that right? Is that fair? What can I do? Who will help? This retaliation is in the hands of the NYPD Hate Crime Task Force. I want those who did this to pay for their crime. What can I do?
