Dear Cliff,
There are many reasons why atheists in American society attack and critize the deluded belief based on the fabricated and false values of Christianity. In the first place it is the dominant religion in this country. It is the leaders of this faith -- regardless of denomination -- who have always viewed atheists as a threat to the huge and successful business the Christians have built to spread their false propaganda, and their just as successful ability to indoctrinate millions of young children before they have the maturity to form other concepts concerning existence.
Whether liberal or conservative, the Christian religion is adamantly opposed to the concepts of atheism. For instance, it was not long ago that the costumed, medieval leader of the Catholic faith -- the pope -- made derogatory remarks supporting his belief that the world must stuggle against the evil advance of atheism on this planet. These were not his exact words, but they define most clearly what this deluded man was attemting to state.
We as atheists, are viewed as the enemy of Christianity by all the major religions that supoport this false theology. Should we sit back in utter silence and allow these misinformed supernaturalists to define us with contempt, revulsion, and hatred? No! Personally, I perceive all religions that base their theology on the "god concept" as Neanderthal. They are all open to criticism from atheists. But until another major religion becomes as influential as Christianity is in this nation, the majority of out criticism is correctly aimed at those churches which identify and rely on the text of the NT as the source of their convoluted dogmas, rituals and worship.
It is our criticism directed at Christianity, that keeps the leaders of this faith from reaching the point where they can -- as they eventually hope -- to turn this government into an authoritarian, Christian theocracy. We mmay lose if the present trend continues and the American public consistently elects and reelects born again idiots as our representatives. But, in the meantime, we must never stop exposing the nonsense, lunacy, irrationality, and deceptive theology that has made the Christian faith one of the most lucrative corporations on the surface of this planet.
