The issue of how to raise free-thinking children in the Bible Belt is an important one, but I think misses the more crucial dilemma: What about the other guy's children? Ignorance is contagious, how else to explain our modern, high-tech world still mired in the throes of religious insanity.
In case you haven't noticed, the Christian majority in this country are armed to the teeth and highly mobilized. I watched one of those superevangelists on television last night proclaim how the number of languages on the planet without a translation of the gospel was quickly moving to zero. As he listed the statistics from the early seventies forward, the growth of this fungus seemed exponential. It's not enough to move to another state, or mind your own business and let the other fellow mind his.
To loosely quote Robert Kennedy (and he may have been quoting someone else, I'm not sure): "All it takes for the evil men to succeed is for the good men to stand by and do nothing." We cannot afford to let the proselytizing Christians (or Muslims, or any other myth-believers) outsell us. Otherwise future generations will still be wrestling with this age-old bugaboo.
Having come to our senses, we owe it to our species to pass along the message: "Grow Up!"
