Quiz: Was it bin Laden? Falwell? Robertson? by Sarah Ovenall (off site)

I'm fighting so I can die a martyr and go to heaven to meet God. Our fight now is against the Americans.
-- Osama bin Laden, quoted by Al-Quds Al-Arabi newspaper, quoted in CBS News, "Bin Laden: I Didn't Do It" (September 12, 2001)

The battle has been moved inside America, and we shall continue until we win this battle, or die in the cause and meet our maker.
-- Osama bin Laden, in a video made on October 20, 2001,quoted from 10 Downing Street F@CTS, "Responsibility for the Terrorist Atrocities in the United States, 11 September 2001: Executive Summary"

Bush and Blair ... don't understand any language but the language of force. Every time they kill us, we kill them, so the balance of terror is achieved.
-- Osama bin Laden, in a video made on October 20, 2001,quoted from 10 Downing Street F@CTS, "Responsibility for the Terrorist Atrocities in the United States, 11 September 2001: Executive Summary"

Issue a call to the young generation to get ready for the holy war and to prepare for that in Afghanistan because jihad in this time of crisis for Muslims is an obligation of all Muslims.
-- Osama bin Laden, in a statement read at a May, 2001, Muslim convention in Afghanistan to prepare the next generation for the jihad, quoted in CBS News, "Bin Laden: I Didn't Do It" (September 12, 2001)

Our Fellow Humans Did This? Using a plane full of civilian passengers to demolish a building filled with the civilian citizens of 80 different nations. Here is America struck by God Almighty ... so that its greatest buildings are destroyed ... I swear to God that America will not live in peace before peace reigns in Palestine, and before the army of the infidels depart the land of Mohammed.
-- Osama bin Laden, in a statement on October 7, 2001, quoted from 10 Downing Street F@CTS, "Responsibility for the Terrorist Atrocities in the United States, 11 September 2001: Executive Summary"

[The damage in New York was] greater than expected.
-- Osama bin Laden, in a statement on October 7, 2001, quoted from 10 Downing Street F@CTS, "September 11 -- 3 Months On" (December, 2001)

I don't regret what happened there.
-- Osama bin Laden, regarding bombing of two US embassies in Africa, quoted from http://i.am/not_a_crook

If the instigation for jihad [holy war] against the Jews and the Americans ... is considered a crime, then let history be a witness that I am a criminal.
-- Osama bin Laden, regarding bombing of two US embassies in Africa, quoted from http://i.am/not_a_crook

It is what we instigated for a while, in self-defence ... So if avenging the killing of our people is terrorism, let history be a witness that we are terrorists.
-- Osama bin Laden, in a video made on October 20, 2001,quoted from 10 Downing Street F@CTS, "Responsibility for the Terrorist Atrocities in the United States, 11 September 2001: Executive Summary"

These events have split the whole world into two camps: the camp of belief and the camp of disbelief.... There is only one God, and I declare that there is no prophet but Muhammad.
-- Osama bin Laden, possibly counting self-proclaimed Christians among "the camp of disbelief," as is common among Fundamentalist Christians and other fundamentalists, who consider that all who worship other than "The" "One" "True" god worship a false god (and thus are atheists), in his speech televised on the day the United States of America and her allies started bombing Afghanistan in late 2001, quoted from Alan Wolfe, "The God of a Diverse People," The New York Times (October 14, 2001)

Tell the Muslims everywhere that the vanguards of the warriors who are fighting the enemies of Islam belong to them and the young fighters are their sons. Tell them that the nation is bent on fighting the enemies of Islam. Once again, I have to stress the necessity of focusing on the Americans and the Jews for they represent the spearhead with which the members of our religion have been slaughtered. Any effort directed against America and the Jews yields positive and direct results -- Allah willing. It is far better for anyone to kill a single American soldier than to squander his efforts on other activities.
-- Osama bin Laden, in May 1998, a little over two months before the US embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania, in the transcript of (ABC reporter) John Miller, "Interview: Osama bin Laden," as posted on the PBS web site (last checked, September 19, 2001)

Our job is to instigate, and by the grace of God, we did that, and certain people responded to this instigation.
-- Osama bin Laden, regarding bombing of two US embassies in Africa, quoted from http://i.am/not_a_crook

They [the United States] violate our land and occupy it and steal the Muslims' possessions, and when faced by resistance they call it terrorism.
-- Osama bin Laden, on TV in June 1999, quoted from http://i.am/not_a_crook

I have high regard and respect for those men who erased the disgrace from the forehead of our nation.
-- Osama bin Laden, on TV in June 1999, quoted from http://i.am/not_a_crook

‘The Scream’ by Edward Munch (This image is in the public domain.)Rev Tim LaHaye (b. 1928)
Writer of Christian doomsday fiction; graduate of ultrafundamentalist Bob Jones University; founding member of the “young Earth” Institute for Creation Research; cofounder with Jerry Falwell of Moral Majority; author of slanderous books and tracts denouncing "Secular Humanism"; founder of American Coalition for Traditional Values; advocate of ancient occult typology known as "four temperaments"

Tim LaHaye ("he's a small-headed man")I'll tell you what is wrong with America. We don't have enough of God's ministers running the country.
-- Rev Tim LaHaye, address, Religious Roundtable breakfast, New York Times September 8, 1984, quoted from Albert J Menendez and Edd Doerr, The Great Quotations on Religious Freedom

Why not admit that the words "separation" and "church" do not even appear in the US Constitution," he added. "Instead, they do appear in Article 52 of the Constitution of the Soviet Union.
-- Rev Tim LaHaye, quoted from Guy Manchester, "The fantasy world of Tim LaHaye," Freedom Writer, summer 2000

Most of all, I believe God has chosen to bless this series. In doing so, he's giving the country and maybe the world, one last, big wake-up call before the events transpire.
-- Rev Tim LaHaye, in an article in the Southern California Christian Times, quoted from Guy Manchester, "Tim LaHaye: the man behind the bestsellers," Freedom Writer, Sept.-Oct. 2000

A major contributor to the present-day tendency to accept and encourage homosexuality is Dr. Sigmund Freud.
-- Rev Tim LaHaye, blaming Freud for the wide spread of homosexuality, in his book What Everyone Should Know about Homosexuality, p. 13, quoted from PsychoHeresy Awareness Newsletter, "Tim LaHaye Promotes Sigmund Freud"

In other words, homosexuality was no longer to be considered an illegal form of debauchery or perversion in which one willingly engaged a person of his own sex, but a "mental illness" which one blamed on his mother. Consequently, a homosexual is not responsible for his behavior -- it's his mother's fault!
-- Rev Tim LaHaye, blaming Freud for saying that homosexuality is the mother's fault, in his book What Everyone Should Know about Homosexuality, p. 13, quoted from PsychoHeresy Awareness Newsletter, "Tim LaHaye Promotes Sigmund Freud"

As important as the father is in the life of a child, even he must take second place to mother during the first three years of life.... Consequently, mothers actually have more to do with producing a predisposition toward homosexuality than fathers. Two kinds of mothers are particularly harmful -- smother mothers and dominating mothers.
-- Rev Tim LaHaye, making the same mistake he earlier blamed Freud for making (!), in his book What Everyone Should Know about Homosexuality, p. 72, quoted from PsychoHeresy Awareness Newsletter, "Tim LaHaye Promotes Sigmund Freud"

I always tell my critics that if they don't like this theory for helping people -- come up with a better one and I'll use it.
-- Rev Tim LaHaye, defending his use of the ancient occult typology of human personalities called "four temperments," in a letter to PsychoHeresy Awareness Ministries, quoted from PsychoHeresy Awareness Newsletter, "Tim LaHaye & Psychoheresy"

[The Freedom Writer] is full of disinformation ... typical of left-wing journals like yours, you print anything you can find that is derogatory to those with whom you disagree -- without checking the facts.

And in the ocean, of course, we have huge creatures.... this is where the plesiosauruses seem to be today, and perhaps also this fire breathing dragon is still down there -- very rare, but occasionally there.

PAMBLOQ Rules! Yesss!!

‘The Scream’ by Edward Munch (This image is in the public domain.)Rabbi Daniel Lapin
American Rabbi of the radical right-wing persuasion; revisionist of American history

Daniel LapinWe really have no choice but to pray and encourage a return to an America steeped in Judeo-Christian values. It is either that or taking our chances in a society with no values at all. For all Americans the former carries certain risks, but the latter spells certain doom. For now, we should not be deflected by theological debate from the life-saving tasks awaiting us. There is work to be done. We must ensure that America will continue to be part of God's plan for the world.
-- Rabbi Daniel Lapin, America's Real War (1999)

Turning the tide will take resolve, courage, and faith. It will take cooperation among those of us who, despite theological differences, recognize that America exists only by Providence. We must follow the example of our founders who forged a union by focusing on areas of common concern, rather than on areas of major dissent. If we allow religious differences to stop us from working together politically, we will not be able to resist the advance of secular humanism. As long as people share the same moral vision for America's public square, it is less important whether that vision is fueled by Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Mormon, Buddhist, or Moslem faith. We must not allow secularism's high priests to separate us from one another on the basis of material distinctions such as skin color, gender, or bank account. We should acknowledge only differences based on spiritual or data differences. One set of data is a three-thousand-year-old system that produced ancient Israel and modern America. The other leads to secular humanism, atheism, socialism and communism. And therein lies our tug-of-war.
-- Rabbi Daniel Lapin, America's Real War (1999)

Yes, as individuals we may each choose our path from a bewildering array of choices and we each must live with the consequences of that choice. As a nation however, we must choose a national doctrine from the only two available. In other words, as a nation we either subscribe to Judeo-Christian principles in public policy or we must subscribe to the public policies of secular atheism. Thirty-plus years of experience tells us that our choice may be between a society filled with wasted human potential, crack babies and criminal predators, while elevating the separation of church and state to the status of Holy Writ, or a

society in which that separation is understood as our founding fathers understood it, acknowledging a Creator and the primacy of religion without establishing a national church.
-- Rabbi Daniel Lapin, America's Real War (1999)

As an Orthodox Jew I must acknowledge that a society can only be successful if it adheres to God's basic plan. By recognizing that a battle is raging and that, right now, Christian conservatives are leading the side I believe is morally, historically, and intellectually correct, I find myself linking arms with those so many of my coreligionists vilify.
-- Rabbi Daniel Lapin, America's Real War (1999)

Roman Catholic Cardinal under fire for failing to stop numerous priests from sexually abusing children

I did not, as a matter of policy, in 1984, '85, '86, '87, '88, '89, '90, '91, '92, '93, '94, '95, '96, '97, '98, '99, 2000, 2001, go to parishes on the occasion of dealing with a priest against whom an allegation of sexual abuse of a child had been made. I see now that that should have been done, but we did not do that. Did I think that I should have informed the parish and then not done it? No. I simply didn't have that as part of our response to these cases.

Anti-education activist; founder of the Society for the Practical Establishment and Perpetuation of the Ten Commandments

Atheists are the true criminals of society.
-- Robert T Lee, on his web site, <www.tencommandments.org>

The best way to understand atheism is to understand its author. Satan is its author.
-- Robert T Lee, on his web site

When you take into account what the so-called "educated" people don't know that's essential to know, and compare it with the vain "education" they do have, it becomes clear that they are quite dumb.
-- Robert T Lee, on his web site, snorting in lofty contempt toward education by modifying the word educated with the term so-called and then creating a redundency by enclosing the same word, educated, in quotation marks, which, in this context, is the same thing as modifying it with the term so-called -- all this in a sentence which, upon closer examination, really doesn't say anything; rather, it just comes of as so much whining!

What is the use of higher learning, critical thinking and educational skills when they do not enable you to know God?
-- Robert T Lee, on his web site

Raising your children under americanism or any other principles other than true Christianity is child abuse.
-- Robert T Lee, on his web site

One of the greatest reasons why the world is getting more evil is that it continually resists and suppresses God's righteousness.
-- Robert T Lee, on his web site

You do not have the right to be wrong, regardless of what any man-made or demonic charter says.
-- Robert T Lee, on his web site, taking a pot-shot at the core value of Twelve Step-based therapy; indeed, a value included in most regimens of emotional and mental health therapy

He who can look at the most prized, honored and exalted things of the world, and see them as being rubbish is a very learned and fortunate person.
-- Robert T Lee, on his web site, discussing the highly prized concept of truth, the humbly honored concept of justice, and

Atheism is the ultimate of satanism. Ask satan does God exist and he will deny it. Ask him does satan exist and he will deny his own existence even while in your presence. Atheism holds the Bible in one hand, but deny that it exists with the other.
-- Robert T Lee, on his web site

ATHEISM IS WORTHLESS
-- Robert T Lee, on his web site

Since atheists rejects the overwhelming evidence, we see proof that atheism is a deliberate rejection of the evidence and His existence. This clearly proves that atheism is not about proof and evidence, but is about rejecting the fundamental principles of life. Atheism's chief purpose of existence is to deny the existence of God in the midst of overwhelming proof. No atheist will admit these facts. But again, this is the nature of satanic atheism: to refuse to admit the truth.
-- Robert T Lee, on his web site, demonstrating his contempt toward education with a plural subject acting in conjunction with a singular verb, his contempt toward truthfulness by misrepresenting atheism, and his contempt toward fairness in discussion by railing about proof and evidence but, as the one making the existential claim (that a thing called a "God" exists), offering nothing in the way of evidence or proof that his claim is, in fact, truthful. Instead, in the place of arguments he does the rhetorical equivalent of yelling, pounding his chest, and buffing his nails when done.

‘The Scream’ by Edward Munch (This image is in the public domain.)Pope Leo XIII (1810-1903)
Roman Catholic Pope from 1878 to 1903, who wrote the first modern papal statement on social and economic theory

The death sentence is a necessary and efficacious means for the Church to attain its end when rebels act against it and disturbers of the ecclesiastical unity, especially obstinate heretics and heresiarchs, cannot be restrained by any other penalty from continuing to derange the ecclesiastical order and impelling others to all sorts of crime ... When the perversity of one or several is calculated to bring about the ruin of many of its children it is bound effectively to remove it, in such wise that if there be no other remedy for saving its people it can and must put these wicked men to death.
-- Pope Leo XIII, advocating death to all heretics and teachers of false doctrine -- showing that the end justifies the means even in the twentieth century, in Lloyd M Graham, Deceptions and Myths of the Bible (1975), p. 468, quoted from Helen Ellerbe, The Dark Side of Christian History

All Catholics must make themselves felt as active elements in daily political life in the countries where they live. They must penetrate, wherever possible, in the administration of civil affairs; must constantly exert the utmost vigilance and energy to prevent the usages of liberty from going beyond the limits fixed by God's law. All Catholics should do all in their power to cause the constitutions of states and legislation to be modeled on the principles of the true Church.
-- Leo XIII, Encyclical, Immortale Dei, 1885, quoted from Albert J Menendez and Edd Doerr, The Great Quotations on Religious Freedom

The Church amongst you, unopposed by the Constitution and government of your nation, fettered by no hostile legislation, protected against violence by the common laws and the impartiality of the tribunals, is free to live and act without hindrance. Yet, through all this is true, it would be very erroneous to draw the conclusion that in America is to be sought the type of the most desirable status of the church, or that it would be universally lawful or expedient for state and church to be, as in America, dissevered and divorced. The fact that Catholicity with you is in good condition, nay, is even enjoying a prosperous growth, is by all means to be attributed to the fecundity with which God has endowed His Church.... But she would bring forth more abundant fruits if, in addition to liberty, she enjoyed the favor of the laws and patronage of the public authority.
-- Leo XIII, quoted from Upton Sinclair, The Profits Of Religion

If unbridled licence of speech and writing be granted to all, nothing will remain sacred and inviolate; even the highest and truest mandates of nature, justly held to be the common and noblest heritage of the human race, will not be spared. Thus, truth being gradually obscured by darkness, pernicious and manifold error, as too often happens, will easily prevail.
-- Leo XIII, Encyclical letter of 20 June 1888, translated by John A Ryan and Francis J Boland in Catholic Principles of Politics (New York, 1948, p. 174).

‘The Scream’ by Edward Munch (This image is in the public domain.)Rev W D Lewis
Late pastor of the Second Presbyterian church of Wheeling, West Virginia

The whole scheme of things In Israel revolved around the idea of a personal God. The first leaders of the Jews saw that it would never do to attempt to create a national solidarity without the establishment of a fixed authority ... So, those first leaders of Israel did the wisest thing ever done by any group of men aspiring to bring forth a nation: they invested all authority in God. They took neither responsibility nor credit for themselves.... They were simply his mouthpieces and his agents.
-- Rev W D Lewis, seeking to bring about "the prestige and power of clericalism," quoted from E Haldeman-Julius, "The Meaning Of Atheism" (rev. C Walker, 2001)

One day in seven, the Sabbath was made holy unto God and set aside solely for his worship (in ancient Israel). There was no choice about it. In those first days there was no such thing as religious liberty in Israel. A man had to go to worship whether he liked it or not. The fact that he didn't like the priests didn't matter ... The excuse that he was intellectually superior to the congregation of Israel didn't work ... Religious liberty was given no thought in Israel. I sometimes wonder if it isn't given too much thought in our own America.
-- Rev W D Lewis, quoted from E Haldeman-Julius, "The Meaning Of Atheism" (rev. C Walker, 2001)

[Excerpt]
I shall never be in full sympathy with our system of compulsory education until there is set up side by side with it a system of compulsory religion.
-- Rev W D Lewis, quoted from E Haldeman-Julius, "The Meaning Of Atheism" (rev. C Walker, 2001)

[Passage]
I shall never be in full sympathy with our system of irreligious education. Why should we be compelled to attend and support our schools if there is nothing that can be done to compel us to attend and support our churches? ... If education is absolutely necessary for our community life, so is religion. Or yet why should we be compelled to support the idea of government if we are at liberty to treat the idea of God with contempt? ... You will never make a full success of a compulsory government or a compulsory education until you give the same dignity to religion and make it compulsory; at any rate compulsory enough to make it respected throughout the land. The nation that plays fast and loose with its idea of God will soon or late play fast and loose with its idea of education and its idea of government.... If God doesn't matter, then nothing else matters, and all the compulsions of life might just as well be set aside.
-- Rev W D Lewis, quoted from E Haldeman-Julius, "The Meaning Of Atheism" (rev. C Walker, 2001)

‘The Scream’ by Edward Munch (This image is in the public domain.)Joseph Lieberman
US Senator, Vice-Presidential candidate (2000)

Joseph LiebermanThe Constitution promises freedom of religion, not freedom from religion. We are, after all not just another nation, but "one nation under God."
-- Joseph Lieberman, campaign speech at Notre Dame University on October 24, 2000, quoted from American Atheists, "Lieberman Again Claims 'No Freedom from Religion' in Notre Dame Address: Cites Judeo-Christian Roots of America"

We know that the Constitution wisely separates church from state, but remember: the Constitution guarantees freedom of religion, not freedom from religion.
-- Joseph Lieberman, campaign speech at Fellowship Chapel, Detroit, August 27, 2000, quoted from AANEWS #808 by American Atheists, August 28, 2000

I miss the days when faith was discussed in public and not the most intimate details of our personal lives.
-- Joseph Lieberman, remarks at Fellowship Chapel, Detroit, Aug. 27, 2000, quoted from "The Constitution Guarantees Freedom From Religion" an open letter to US Vice-Presidential candidate Senator Joseph Lieberman, issued by the Freedom From Religion Foundation on August 28, 2000

[We shouldn't] indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion.
-- Joseph Lieberman, quoted in Natalie Angier, "Confessions of a Lonely Atheist," New York Times Magazine, January 14, 2001; Angier called this "athiesm baiting," for which Lieberman received "the lightest possible slap on the wrist from his more secularized Jewish counterparts"

Let us break through some of the inhibitions that have existed to talk together across the flimsy lines of separation of faith, to talk together, to study together, to pray together, and ultimately to sing together His Holy name.
-- Joseph Lieberman, remarks at Fellowship Chapel, Detroit, Aug. 27, 2000, quoted from AANEWS #808 by American Atheists, August 28, 2000

We cannot fulfill that purpose [environmentalism] if we are heaping contempt on God's creation.
-- Joseph Lieberman, campaign speech in October, 2000, quoted from Conrad Goeringer, AANEWS 836, October 23, 2000

[Religion is a way of reconstructing] what has come to feel like a crumbling moral framework in the life of our nation.
-- Joseph Lieberman, In Praise of Public Life, quoted from AANEWS #808 by American Atheists, August 28, 2000

John Adams, second president of the United States, wrote that our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people.... George Washington warned us never to indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion.
-- Joseph Lieberman, remarks at Fellowship Chapel, Detroit, Aug. 27, 2000, misrepresenting the views of both presidents, quoted from AANEWS #808 by American Atheists, August 28, 2000. Washington wished the masses to be religious, thinking that it suppressed rebellion and vice, though he did not heed this advice for himself. Adams sometimes used the terms religion and morality synonymously, but his idea of religion was a far cry from the modern ideas of the the government endorsement of religion being implemented by both the Religious Left and the Religious Right. Although both Presidents openly gave lip-service to the idea of the common people benefitting from organized religion, Washington and Adams each shunned religion for themselves. Most importantly (and most crucial to exposing Lieberman's deceitfulness, here) Washington and Adams (like almost all Presidents through Truman) openly and vehemently detested the notion that government should play any role in advocating religion (the fact that Adams was talked into issuing a religious proclamation notwithstanding).

[People of faith must] reassure them [atheists] that we share with them the core values of America, that our faith is not inconsistent with their freedom and our mission is not one of intolerance, but one of love.... I stand before you today as a witness to the goodness of God. For me, like you and like my running mate Al Gore, faith provided a foundation, order and purpose in my life.
-- Joseph Lieberman, remarks at Fellowship Chapel, Detroit, Aug. 27, 2000, in a near-gratuitous nod to atheists and other "unchurched" Americans, quoted from AANEWS #808 by American Atheists, August 28, 2000

While so much of our economic life is thriving, too much of our moral life is still stagnating. As a people, we need to reaffirm our faith.
-- Joseph Lieberman, remarks at Fellowship Chapel, Detroit, August 27, 2000, quoted from AANEWS #808 by American Atheists, August 28, 2000
